Minor in Community Leadership and Civic Engagement

This interdisciplinary minor prepares students for careers in nonprofit organizations and government agencies that provide services. Designed to complement a social science major, it provides additional training in diversity, equity, and justice, as well as practical experience in the field. The minor is also recommended for anyone interested in community and volunteer work. 19 to 20 credits required.

Lower Division Requirement (3-4 units)

Take one from SOC 101 Sociology in Everyday Life, SOC 103 Contemporary Global Issues or HNRS 120 Social Science Seminar

Cal Lutheran courses are 4 units. Transfer units may be 3 units.

Upper Division Requirement (4 units)

Take one from SOC 421 Applied Sociology or SOC 440 Ethnographic Methods

Electives (12 units, at least 8 units upper division)

Complete 3 courses from SOC 210 Intro to Gender Studies, SOC 200/300 Sexuality and Society, SOC 370 Deviance in US Society, SOC 318 Immigration in the Global Age, SOC 360 Racial and Ethnic Relations

One elective may be chosen from SOC 214 Intro to Public Health, SOC 321 Medical Sociology, SOC 330 Death and Dying, SOC 334 Sociology of Education, SOC 340 Families and Intimate Relationships, POLS 207 Contemporary Issues in Public Policies, POLS 317 Politics of Community Development, COMM 311 Intercultural Communication, CRIM 410 Substance Abuse, CRIM 430 Gender, Race, Ethnicity and Crime

Internship is recommended. Does not apply to sociology electives.

Total for the minor: 19 -20 units.

The total units are 19 if a transferred lower-division required course has 3 units.
