If understanding human thought and behavior is at the heart of a liberal arts education, then the study of psychology represents the foundation of that process. A psychology major is ideal for those interested in the study of human thought, emotion, and behavior.

Combining Theory and Observation

At California Lutheran University (CLU), our psychology program offers students a comprehensive exploration of the discipline's empirical and theoretical foundations and applications. Ultimately, a psychology degree from CLU equips students with the needed skills and knowledge for life after undergraduate education, whether they choose to attend graduate school or enter a career field.

Centered Towards Experiential Learning

Designed to give students hands-on experience, our program and faculty encourage students to actively engage in the learning process. We offer a number of courses tailored for experiential learning (e.g., Clinical Practicum, Applied Psychology, Introduction to Counseling & Psychotherapy, or Research Practicum), as well as opportunities for students to continue their learning outside the classroom. Students can gain valuable experience by participating in an internship at local organizations, working as a faculty research assistant, or leading their own research. Each year, several students receive support to present the findings of their research projects at undergraduate, regional, and even national conferences.

Choosing Between a B.A. or B.S. Degree

The choice between a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in psychology depends on students' future career goals. Typically students interested in clinical work (e.g., Therapy, Community Service Centers, Social Work) or business, pursue a B.A. in psychology. Those considering careers in research-focused areas should consider seeking a B.S. in psychology.

The bachelor’s degree in psychology is excellent preparation for graduate work in psychology, law and business. With a bachelor’s degree, employment opportunities can be found in psychiatric rehabilitation programs, as research assistants and in the business world. Those with master’s degrees may work in clinics and institutions, teach at a two-year college or work as school psychologists and counselors. For some clinical and research work, a doctorate is required.

Psi Chi International Honor Society

Qualified students may join the CLU chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society In Psychology. Psi Chi hosts several events each semester and provides excellent networking opportunities.

Emphasis Area Options

Because psychology may be applied to a wide range of human endeavors, students may add an emphasis area to the B.A. or B.S. to increase their marketability at graduation. Students select courses from an approved list of interdisciplinary courses to complete one of the following emphasis areas: Behavioral/Clinical Applications, Business/Organizational Applications, Family and Child Development, Health and Wellness Applications, Law and Criminal Behavior Applications, Psychobiology, Sports Psychology Applications.
