Cultural Memory
The study of cultural memory is a vital and growing field. The Museum Studies major integrates this concept into history and art classes, including investigating innovative teaching techniques on the topic. Major courses reflect an interdisciplinary focus based on the voices and material artifacts. There are course options in history, visual arts, business, education, communications, psychology, and environmental science — giving students a range of options to discover. As a collaboration between the History and Visual Art Department, the major offers an opportunity for students to focus on historical museum studies as well as art history.
Museum management
The major in museum studies develops an broad understanding of the design, organization, and management of museums in order to offer a path to becoming a curator, archivist, educator and more. Internships are required in the major ranging from Florence to London and Washington, D.C. Locally, several museums also collaborate with the program among them the Ventura Museum of History and Art, the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum, the Chumash Indian Museum, and the Getty Art Museum,
Step into the world of history and art
In this program, your primary courses will be focused on history and the visual arts. Lower division courses will focus on the acquisition of an introductory knowledge of the history of world civilizations and the United States, as well as the fundamental skills needed to succeed in more specialized coursework. Upper division courses will offer a variety of specialized classes that allow more focus on specific installations. 70 credit minimum, 33 credits upper division
