Requirements for the Preliminary Education Specialist Credential in Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN)
The following requirements must be fulfilled during the program:
Bachelor’s degree or higher degree from regionally-accredited institution
Basic Skills Proficiency
Subject Matter Competence
U.S. Constitution
Mandated Reporter Certificate
Certificate of Clearance
Subject Matter Competence
Negative TB Test
CPR Certification Adult/Infant/Child
Literacy Performance Assessment
Passage of the TPA
Successful completion of all of the required courses for the specific specialization with a GPA of 3.0 or better, including passing all fieldwork assessments

Requirements for those with a valid Prerequisite Teaching Credential:
Candidates who hold a valid California teaching credential can complete the following course sequence to obtain an Education Specialist credential or authorization in Mild to Moderate Support Needs (MMSN). It is important to note that, depending on each candidate’s situation, additional or different coursework may be required to meet the credential requirements set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Candidates are advised to contact the GSOE Credential Analyst for comprehensive information regarding the credential requirements.
Those who have a valid Multiple Subject Credential: (15–18 units*)
EDSP 515, EDSP 519, EDSP 525, EDSP 532, and EDSP 539/534B
Those who have a Single Subject Credential: (18–21 units*)
EDSP 515, EDSP 519, EDSP 521, EDSP 525, EDSP 532, and EDSP 539/534B
Those who have an ESN Education Specialist Credential: (6–9 units*)
EDSP 532 and EDSP 539/534B
*Upon reviewing the transcription, depending on each candidate’s situation, additional or different coursework may be required to meet the credential requirements set by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)
